WABAUNSEE COUNTY, Kan. (AP) — Federal prosecutors want to keep $180,000 in suspected drug money that was found during a Kansas traffic stop.

Court records say the money was uncovered in July when a Kansas Highway Patrol trooper pulled over a pickup truck on Interstate 70 in Wabaunsee County for a traffic violation. The driver said he was traveling from Chicago to Denver to visit his sick mother, but a vehicle search turned up seven bundles of cash wrapped in duct tape.

Documents say the driver then told law enforcement that he was being paid to take the money to a Denver hotel. A drug dog detected the odor of controlled substances coming from the currency.

Prosecutors filed last week for the cash to be forfeited to the government.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas legislator who defected from the Republican Party last year is running for the U.S. Senate next year as a Democrat.

State Sen. Barbara Bollier

State Sen. Barbara Bollier, of the Kansas City suburb of Mission Hills, promised an independent approach in kicking off her campaign Wednesday. The 61-year-old retired anesthesiologist also condemned dysfunction in Washington as she seeks to replace retiring Republican Sen. Pat Roberts.

Republicans haven’t lost a U.S. Senate race in Kansas since 1932. But Democrats are heartened by the victories last year of U.S. Rep. Sharice Davids in a Kansas City area district and Gov. Laura Kelly statewide.

Former federal prosecutor Barry Grissom and Manhattan Mayor Pro Tem Usha Reddi also are running as Democrats. Republican contenders include Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle , western Kansas congressman Roger Marshall and immigration hardliner Kris Kobach .

Crisis Stabilization Center ribbon ribbon cutting & open house will be held Friday

The ribbon cutting and open house for the new Crisis Stabilization Center in Manhattan will be held Friday afternoon at 1558 Hayes Drive. This facility will serve a 10-county area including Riley and Geary counties.

Pawnee Mental Health Services has announced the center will provide an alternative to emergency room visits, and holdings in jail, while being able to provide care for community members in crisis in a safe, therapeutic environment.

Accessibility closer to home than alternative resources means that individuals are more likely to be agreeable to the services, voluntarily and willingly. Treatment is with the same organization and often the same staff and physicians that they will follow up with upon discharge, thus increasing the compliance with aftercare.  It can also serve as a stepping stone back to their home community for those being released from state hospitals.

The primary goal is to respond to needs of adults experiencing crisis and to resolve immediate concerns and connect people with community-based services.

The City of Manhattan and the KSU Student Governing Association (SGA) are teaming up to provide a Manhattan Rental Housing Forum to highlight the state of tenant-landlord relations in Manhattan.

Manhattan has more than 12,000 rental units and has had numerous community conversations over the years about various facets of the tenant – landlord relationship and the condition of rental housing in the local market. The 2019 Forum will focus on rental resources in the Manhattan area, including information on the Kansas Tenant Landlord Act and the City’s rental inspection service. The event will include a panel discussion featuring two local renters and two local landlords, plus the results of both a tenant survey and a landlord survey will be revealed.

In planning for the Forum, Assistant City Manager Dennis Marstall stated, “Manhattan has such a large renting population and landlord community, that it is important to continually foster positive tenant-landlord relationships and help educate the community about rental resources. We appreciate the KSU Student Governing Association’s understanding of the key role they can play in helping to better inform KSU students, faculty and staff, and the larger Manhattan community about rental resources.”

The Forum is open to the public, including non-KSU affiliated renters and landlords.

WHAT: Manhattan Rental Housing Forum to bring all renters and landlords in Manhattan together to talk about the current state of the tenant-landlord relationship in Manhattan and to provide resources.

WHEN: Tuesday, October 29, 2019
