The semi was moving to the inside and slowing for emergency vehicles.

A pedestrian identified as Andre Levar Murphy, 38, Manhattan, was in custody by Dickinson County Deputies and on both knees in the south ditch, according to the KHP.  The semi hit Murphy after he stood up and ran across both eastbound lanes of traffic.

K-State Campaign surpasses $1.1 billion milestone

$

MANHATTAN — Kansas State University’s Innovation and Inspiration Campaign surpassed the $1.1 billion mark in December 2017, making significant progress toward its $1.4 billion goal by 2020.

Led by the Kansas State University Foundation, the Innovation and Inspiration Campaign was launched in October 2015 with an original goal of $1 billion. In April 2017, Kansas State University President Richard Myers announced that the campaign’s original goal was exceeded one year ahead of schedule and extended the effort with a new goal of $1.4 billion.

“The continued success and momentum of the Innovation and Inspiration Campaign is rooted in the generosity and commitment of the K-State family to the future of Kansas State University,” Myers said. “We sincerely thank our donors who have invested in K-State faculty, students and programs. Their support is key to the university’s success, now and in the future.”

Funds raised through the campaign will be used to support students, faculty, facility enhancements and program support, and will advance the university toward becoming a Top 50 public research university by 2025.

Three signature drivers have helped to build momentum during the campaign’s extension period:

• The land-grant mission of providing an accessible and affordable education to the people of Kansas and beyond.

• Centers of excellence and interdisciplinary programs — areas where Kansas State University has a competitive advantage and the potential to change the world.

• Substantially increasing the endowment for the future of Kansas State University through estate-planning gifts.

“It’s not often that a university has the ability to exceed fundraising goals as rapidly as Kansas State University has with the Innovation and Inspiration Campaign,” said KSU Foundation President and CEO Greg Willems. “We continue to set ambitious goals and the K-State family continues to step up to ensure the future of this great university. The generosity of K-State donors is redefining the university’s future, and it will be exciting to see this campaign through to its conclusion in 2020.”

As Kansas State University’s strategic partner for philanthropy, the KSU Foundation inspires and guides philanthropy toward university priorities to boldly advance K-State family. The foundation is leading Innovation and Inspiration: The Campaign for Kansas State University to raise $1.4 billion for student success, faculty development, facility enhancement and programmatic success. KSHSAA: Manhattan High’s Gonzales Named National Coach of the Year

TOPEKA, Kan. — Manhattan High School’s Robert Gonzales and Hoisington High School’s Bruce Cooper have been selected as 2017 National Coaches of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association.

Leading the Manhattan Indians wrestling squad to a 6A State Championship in 2017, Gonzales hoisted his third state title as a head coach. A 40-year head coaching career has accumulated a record of 317 wins and 133 losses. Gonzales has fingerprints on the leadership of wrestling throughout the state of Kansas and also the nation. The leader of the Indians has served on numerous state and national committees during his time around the mat.

In 2017, the Indians crowned two state champions individually and also captured two runners-up in the path to their state title at Hartman Arena.

Gonzales has been named the Kansas Wrestling Coach Association (KWCA) Coach of the Year six times, while being named the City of Topeka Coach of the Year nine times.

Bruce Cooper has coached golf for 38 years, most recently at Hoisington High School. His girls team this past fall placed third at the 3-2-1A State Championship. During Cooper’s career he has claimed 16 state or regional championships coaching the students on the links.

Named the 2017 Kansas Coaches Association Coach of the Year for girls golf, Cooper was also named the NFICA Girls Golf Outstanding Coach in Kansas in 1986. In addition to coaching golf, he also has coached football and basketball during his career.

This is the 33rd and 34th time a Kansan has been selected as Coach of the Year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Coaches Association.

The NFHS, which has been recognizing coaches through an awards program since 1982, honors coaches in the top 10 girls sports and top 10 boys sports (by participation numbers), and in one “other” sport that is not included in the top 10 listings. Winners of NFHS awards must be active coaches during the year for which they receive their award.

The KSHSAA works with the Kansas Coaches Association (KCA) to nominate Kansas coaches. The KCA contacts their potential state award recipients to complete a “coach profile” form that requests information regarding the coach’s record, membership in and affiliation with coaching and other professional organizations, involvement with other school and community activities and programs, and coaching philosophy. To be approved as an NFCA award recipient and considered for sectional and national coach of the year, this profile form must be completed by the coach or designee and then approved by the executive director (or designee) of the state athletic/activities association.

Gonzales and Cooper received this national accolade after first being awarded state and sectional awards. Other sectional and state coaches of the year from Kansas will be announced at a later date. The NFHS is divided into eight geographical sections with Kansas part of Section 5 – Midwest (KS, MN, MO, NE, ND, SD).

The NFHS Coaches Association has an advisory committee, composed of a chair and eight sectional representatives.  The sectional committee representatives evaluate the state award recipients and select the best candidates for the sectional award in each sport category. The NFHS Coaches Association Advisory Committee then considers the sectional candidates in each sport, ranks them according to a point system, and determines a national winner for each of the 20 sport categories, the spirit category and one “other” category.

Kan, Child Welfare Wants More Money So Children Can Sleep In Homes Instead Of Offices

Kansas’ troubled child welfare agency asked lawmakers Monday for money to solve mounting problems — foster kids sleeping on offices, children lost in the system, and a skyrocketing caseload.

Legislators and advocates expressed outrage earlier at news that children slept in foster care contractors’ offices because foster homes had no room. Department for Children and Families secretary Gina Meier-Hummel said some of the requested money would go toward holding beds open for hard-to-place kids.

The money, $16.5 million over two years, would also allow DCF to hire more people to find kids who have run away or otherwise disappeared from their foster care placements.

Meier-Hummel’s predecessor, Phyllis Gilmore, was criticized for being seemingly unaware that three sisters had been missing from their foster home in Tonganoxie for months. Meier-Hummel has been getting a daily report of missing kids since taking office Nov. 1. She said about 70 kids are currently missing from their foster care placements.

The secretary said $6.55 million of the added money would go toward keeping children safely with their families — and out of foster care.

“We (should) do the right thing by keeping children in families, but first, they have to be safe,” Meier-Hummel said.

Colyer said the appointment of a new DCF secretary, as well as the legislative interest around a child welfare task force that was created last year, has created an opportunity for change.

“We’re at a juncture where we have legislative support, we have some new ideas and we’re going to be doing a top-to-bottom review – we want to deal with problems,” said Colyer, who’s taking the lead on child welfare in the expectation that he’ll soon replace Sam Brownback as governor. He’s also running to be elected governor in November.

Rep. Linda Gallagher, a Lenexa Republican, said the recommendation for more money tells her Brownback intends to make child welfare a priority this legislative session.

“All of the additional funds are needed, and they all address problems areas that we heard about last year,” said Gallagher, who is a member of the Child Welfare Task Force. “Most of the legislature is aware of the problems in the system, and has the willingness to address it with additional funding.”
