Officers and senior non-commissioned officers of the 1st Infantry Division kicked off the holiday this year by serving meals for their fellow service members.
Each November, Fort Riley’s food service Soldiers pull out all the stops to provide traditional Thanksgiving meals. This year nearly 1,400 pounds of food was prepared over the course of 17 hours, complete with elaborate decorations for their peers.
“The purpose is for the single Soldiers, especially those who cant go home for the holidays, to have a chance to be around family, our army family,” said Brigade Food Adviser Erik Iwai. “For all the soldiers on Fort Riley to enjoy a meal, sit down with their leaders and have their leaders serve them. It’s a great team building event.”
With several thousand Soldiers stationed at Fort Riley still over seas during the holiday. The event serves as a celebration as well as a dedication to service.
“In the Army, Soldiers often come together around their meals,” said Brigadier General Patrick Frank. “So here at Thanksgiving this is one of those very special occasions. You really see the teamwork that is involved in our units, in our formations across the division. You see it right here in this dining facility. You go around and see our soldiers all enjoying a Thanksgiving meal together. The same Soldiers that were in Kuwait last year and potentially are looking at a deployment again next year. This means a lot to them to come in here and enjoy time with their friends and their family that are here enjoying this meal with them.”
A second dining session will be served up Thursday for Soldiers and families who missed Wednesday’s meal.
