Fire damages shed, 2 homes and kills pet rabbit

Manhattan, Kan., May 9, 2019) —Authorities are working to determine the cause of an early morning fire in Manhattan.

Just before 12:30 a.m. on Thursday, the fire crews were dispatched to 2112 Mike Place for a report of a structure fire.

Upon arrival, crews found an approximately 10′ by 10′ garden shed that was fully involved with fire spreading to the adjacent mobile home located at 2112 Mike Place, according to Deputy Chief Ryan Almes.

The shed fire was contained within five minutes, although crews had to remove siding and skirting of the mobile homes to ensure extinguishment.

A total of 17 firefighters responded on 6 fire apparatus responded with the last units clearing at 4:10 a.m. Both homes were occupied at the time of the fire with no injuries reported. A pet rabbit died in the shed fire.

The fire damaged the shed, the mobile home located at 2112 Mike Place and the mobile home located at 404 Sherry Place.

Loss is estimated at $2000 to the shed and contents, $5000 to the exterior of 2112 Mike Place, and $100 to the skirting of 404 Sherry Place.
