The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for Sunday that includes north central and northeast Kansas. Geary, Riley, Dickinson, Pottawatomie, Clay, Republic, Washington, Nemaha, Brown, Cloud, Jackson, Ottawa and Marshall counties are included in the watch. Junction City and Manhattan are in the watch area.
The potential hazards include snow, blowing and drifting snow, and near blizzard conditions on Sunday with wind chills in the single digits by Sunday night. The storm will likely begin over north central Kansas after midnight Sunday morning and the peak of the storm appears to be through the morning on Sunday. The storm should leave the area by Sunday evening.
Holiday travel will be difficult if not dangerous. Strong winds with any amount of snow could cause severely restricted visibilities.
Total now accumulations of two to six inches are possible with the projection for the Junction City – Manhattan area estimated in the two to five inch range.
