RILEY COUNTY POLICE DEPARTMENT
Have you noticed a small blue light installed on top of some traffic signals around Manhattan? The lights are used to help with enforcement of red light running violations. The blue lights are connected directly to the red light indication of a traffic signal and can be seen from all directions.
The blue lights have been installed at 3 traffic signals in Manhattan and will be added at other intersections over time. Intersections where T-bone accidents occur most frequently are selected. The blue light enforcement program allows RCPD to safely enforce red light compliance, leading to the primary goal of accident reduction.
Here’s how it works:
If an officer is near the intersection, they can view vehicles that enter after the signal has turned red and the blue light turns on. The officer is in a better position to safely pull out into traffic and pull over the offending vehicle and make the road ways safer for everyone.
