MANHATTAN—Starting June 3, 2018, the Riley County Police Department Corrections Division will be implementing changes to jail visitation.
According to a media release from the RCPD, the jail has added video visitation as a method of communication with inmates in an effort to improve communication and make it more convenient for citizens to talk to their loved ones.
“I am excited about this opportunity for the inmate’s friends and family members to communicate in a more convenient and private manner. There are many people who cannot or do not want to come to the police department to visit their loved one,” Jail Division Captain Kurt Moldrup said. “Now it is possible to visit through a secure link over the internet or send an email from the comfort of your home, whether that’s in Manhattan or Alaska.”
There are several ways to utilize the video visitation services. Citizens can come to the Riley County Police Department located at 1001 S Seth Child Road in Manhattan during normal operating business hours to use the on-site kiosks. Kiosk use is free of charge. Availability of inmates at any given time is dependent upon any restrictions in the jail.
To conduct a video visitation from the comfort of your home, go to inmatecanteen.com to register, set up an account and schedule a session. There is a small fee to use the video visitation service from any site other than the police department kiosks.
Along with video visitation, the new service allows citizens to deposit funds, order commissary, send an SMS message, and email inmates. With the added convenience of video visitation, the in-person visitation times will be shortened to 15-minute slots two days a week.
“I believe this change will dramatically increase accessibility for inmates while improving safety, security and efficiency for both the jail staff and the inmates,” Captain Moldrup said.
