The Fort Riley Outdoorsmen Group will host a “first time” youth deer hunt Oct. 7-10 at Fort Riley.
Experienced deer hunters from the group’s board will guide the first-time hunters, who must be 9 to 15 years of age (may be waived based on experience). Children of deployed parents will receive priority. Parents or guardians may accompany; each youth will be assigned a FROG guide for safety.
No hunting experience is needed. Guides will assist youth in learning about whitetail deer, conservation and hunting. The assigned FROG mentor will also assist in cleaning deer at the end of the hunt, if successful.
A range orientation will be held Friday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m. at Range 4 on Fort Riley. Youth will have to display proper marksmanship and safety knowledge prior to any hunting. Youth must have a deer permit for Unit 8 (available from any issuer of Kansas hunting licenses), and are encouraged to bring their own firearm, ammunition and hunter-orange cap or vest, if available. A limited number of firearms, ammunition and blaze-orange gear will be available for those who have none.
Guides will arrange for transportation to and from the hunting area. For more information or to sign up, email the FROG at fortrileyoutdoorsmengroup@yahoo.com or visit https://www.facebook.com/FROutdoorsmenGroup/.
