Army names new Fort Riley commander to replace fired officer

The United States Army announced today that Maj. Gen.
Joseph Martin will assume command of the 1st Infantry Division headquartered
at Fort Riley, Kansas.

Martin, a 1986 graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point,
most recently served as commanding general of the National Training Center
in Fort Irwin, California. Prior to that assignment, he served as the deputy
commanding general for Maneuver of the 1st Cavalry Division.

He earlier commanded the 2nd Brigade, 1st Inf. Div. at Fort Riley and
deployed with that command to serve in northwest Baghdad. Following brigade
command, he became the chief of staff of III Corps in Fort Hood.

Martin will be succeeded at the NTC by Brig. Gen. Jeffery D. Broadwater.
