Kansans Medicare Basics Workshops scheduled for Manhattan

MANHATTAN —People who will soon get Medicare, or who just want to know more about Medicare, will have a regular opportunity to better understand their health insurance options the fourth Tuesday of every month, 4 to 6 p.m. at the North Central-Flint Hills Area Agency on Aging, 401 Houston St. in Manhattan. The first Answers for Older Kansans Medicare Basics workshop will happen Tues., Jan. 23.

“You’ll get unbiased and easy-to-understand information about Medicare,” said Julie Govert Walter, NC-FH AAA Executive Director. “Our staff are certified Medicare experts and our Medicare Basics workshop is geared for anyone interested in learning more about Medicare or getting their questions answered.”

The workshop is especially helpful for those nearing age 65, those who will soon qualify because of a disability and people who are helping family members with insurance and financial matters. There is no cost to attend Medicare Basics, however, advance registration is advised. Contact Alma Triana at            (800) 432-2703 or almat@ncfhaaa.com to reserve your place.

Karen Mayse, the Area Agency’s Senior Health Insurance Counseling for Kansas (SHICK) program supervisor will cover Medicare eligibility, how and when to apply, what is covered in Medicare’s various parts and how to fill coverage gaps. She will also review programs available to assist low-income Kansans and ways to prevent Medicare fraud.

“Those who attend our Medicare Basics workshops give us consistent high ratings and tell us that they appreciate getting straight answers to their questions about Medicare,” Walter said. “We are delighted to sponsor this workshop on a regular basis.”
