The following summary of calls for service/reports filed by the Riley County Police Department is a portion of those received by police. Some names, addresses, and case details are withheld to follow local, state, and federal law as well as in an attempt to protect community members from being victimized further. Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
MANHATTAN, KAN. – Officers with the Riley County Police Department and emergency crews responded to the area near Avery Ave. and Kimball Ave. in Manhattan on September 16, 2016 at approximately 11:30 AM for a report of a single vehicle injury accident. Police found that a 2003 white Ford F250 truck driven by, Brandon Kerwin, 22, of Manhattan left the roadway and stuck a “Riley County Fair” permanent sign, a power pole, and a residential fence as well as several street signs. Clik here to view.S following this accident that is believed to be a result of a medical issue while driving. No citations were issued at the time of this report and for several hours after the collision Kimball Ave. was closed to traffic to facilitate the accident investigation.
Shaun Bell, 28, of Fort Riley, Kansas was arrested on September 17, 2016 at approximately 12:15 AM while in the 2200 block of Westchester Drive in Manhattan following a physical altercation involving a glass cup which was struck across the face of the victim in this case. Bell was arrested on the offense of aggravated battery and given a bond of $10,000.00 after Derek Williams, 38, of Fort Riley, Kansas was struck across the face with a glass cup. This cup broke and caused severe lacerations to the face which caused Williams to be transported to Via Christi Hospital for treatment. At the time of this report Bell was not confined at the Riley County Jail.
Police filed an injury accident report near Tuttle Creek Blvd. and Seth Child Road on September 19, 2016 at approximately 11:55 AM after a collision occurred between a 1994 white Ford passenger car driven by Catherine Merz, 19, of St. Mary’s, Kansas and a 2007 white Chevy Impala driven by Kenneth Coyle, 34, of Clay Center, Kansas. Police found that prior to the collision Merz attempted to complete a u-turn and was struck by Coyle. Merz was issued a citation for failure to yield the right of way and was also transported to Via Christi Hospital for complaint of pain.
