The Riley County Police Department and emergency personnel from the Manhattan Fire Department and Riley County EMS will be participating in a training exercise taking place over three consecutive days later this month. This training will focus on streamlining interagency cooperation during high stress and dynamic emergency responses.
“We work together well and often, however, we wanted to come together in a training environment and practice something that we hope doesn’t ever need to be used; specifically, integrating Fire and EMS into our initial emergency response. By virtue of this integration we hope to help victims before law enforcement is able to completely secure and make safe a crime scene,” said Director Brad Schoen, Riley County Police Department.
For the past several months training staff with area emergency services have worked with USD 383 officials on securing a site for the training which will be closed to the public. The training will take place at Marlatt Elementary School in Manhattan from July 11 to July 13. Signs designating the area as a temporary training site will be placed near the training scenario to remind the surrounding community that there are no dangers to the public.
“USD 383 is grateful that our community emergency response partners are willing to train in our school buildings. The training benefits everyone involved and will especially benefit the students of USD 383 if a real life situation would ever occur,” states Michele Jones, USD 383 Director of Communications and School Safety. “This year we have some teachers and other building staff who will be watching and participating in the training. It is important for our staff to understand how RCPD, MFD and Riley County EMS coordinate and cooperate during an emergency response.”
