The Riley County Police Department released a statement on social media Thursday morning addressing reports of a telephone scam in the area. In the statement, police said:
We’ve had many reports from people in the area that they’ve received a call from “Deputy Cook” telling them they owe money, and then asking for personal information.
First, we don’t have Deputies. Second, we will never call you and tell you that you owe money.
If you receive calls that tell you you owe money, or that you need to pay money to take care of a warrant, or to pay money to prevent getting a warrant, these are all scams! Please call in to dispatch at 785-537-2112 to verify the identity of who you are speaking to.
